Prospective Projects Proposed for Research in 2008 and beyond
The Technical Advisory Group of the Centre identifies and develops the prospective research proposals and discusses these with transformer and equipment users and suppliers to seek support.
Currently, the following prospective projects are being considered for commencement on 1 July 2008:
- Assess moisture conditions of transformer population of Sponsoring Utilities.
- Rank all transformers in a Utility in terms of the moisture contamination.
- Establish the quality of factory dryout processes used at different transformer manufacturing plants via the following approaches:
- At the factory, together with the transformer manufacturer, perform moisture in oil measurement and moisture in solid insulation evaluation during the factory heat run test;
- In the field, on new units purchased recently, perform moisture assessment via one- or two-year monitoring of the transformers on-line.
- Profile loading / overloading capability vs. risk of a transformer failure as function of moisture content.
- Provide methodology and criteria for assessment of remnant insulation life of transforms.
- Develop guidelines and recommendations for on-line dryout of transformers.
- Offer research and research based application advice on the natural ester based transformer fluids, including retro filling.
- Develop an advanced asset management technology via:
- Sharing the existing experiences of the Sponsor Utilities;
- Implementing on-line monitoring technologies for diagnostics of transformers;
- Proper condition assessment and ranking of transformers;
- Development of engineering documentation for asset management decision making.
