Testing Lab

One aim of the testing lab is to provide an independent test bed for industry. The test transformer has the means for testing and assessing industrial online and offline monitoring and diagnostic techniques and online transformer oil and insulation processing technologies.

A second purpose of the testing lab is to provide an experimental rig in the form of a full size live transformer. The test transformer is used for research and development in the following directions:

• Dynamics of temperature in transformer windings and core;
• Prediction of the hottest spot temperature;
• Thermal imaging of transformer;
• Thermal model of transformer;
• Moisture model of transformer;
• Dynamics of temperature, moisture and gases in transformer paper-oil system;
• Overload and bubble emission;
• Optimisation of cooling systems;
• Ageing of paper and oil insulation;
• Degree of polymerisation (DP) of paper samples vs. furans in oil testing;
• Transformer vibrations and acoustics;
• Winding looseness and its detection;
• On-line dryout and oil processing;
• High voltage bushings.
